For breastfeeding mothers, choosing a good breast pump is just the first step. The real key to a comfortable and efficient pumping process is often overlooked: the flange size of the breast pump.
Many mothers experience pain when pumping, and even cracked or swollen nipples, thinking it's due to too strong suction. However, up to 70% of the time, the reason is actually an ill-fitting flange size.
-
Too small a size: The nipple constantly rubs against the flange tunnel during pumping, leading to redness, cracking, and even mastitis.
-
Too large a size: Too much of the areola is pulled into the flange tunnel, which not only causes areola swelling but also results in incomplete milk drainage due to uneven pressure.
Common Size Misconceptions
-
"I'll just use the same size as my friend": Everyone's nipple size, shape, and even left and right sides are different. It is recommended to measure both nipples individually.
-
"Will my size change after giving birth?": Yes. After the initial postpartum swelling subsides, or after breastfeeding for a period, nipple size may change slightly, requiring re-evaluation.
How to Measure Correctly
Use a soft ruler or a dedicated "nipple measuring card" to measure the diameter (at the widest point) at the base of the nipple.
Note: Only measure the "nipple" itself, do not include the surrounding "areola."
The measured diameter is not the flange size. To allow space for the nipple to move back and forth during pumping,
*For example: If the nipple base diameter is 17mm, you should choose a 21mm flange.
- You need to add 3-4mm. For postpartum mothers 👩
- You need to add 4-5mm. For prenatal mothers 🤰 (it is recommended to measure around 36 weeks for more accuracy)
If your nipples are flat or difficult to measure
Small Reminder
-
Left and right may differ: It's common for both nipples to be different sizes, please measure them separately.
-
Sizes can change: As you progress through different stages of breastfeeding (e.g., early postpartum vs. after supply and demand have balanced), your size may change subtly. Please remeasure if you feel discomfort.
-
Stop immediately if uncomfortable: If you continue to experience pain or notice nipple injury, please consult a professional lactation consultant.
Observe After Measuring
After putting on your equipment and starting to pump, please use the following checklist for final confirmation:
✅ This is the correct size
-
Free movement: The nipple slides smoothly in the center of the tunnel, without constantly rubbing against the wall.
-
Minimal areola: Only a very small amount of areola (about 1-2mm) is slightly drawn into the tunnel.
-
Feeling of emptiness: After pumping, breasts feel light and free of hard lumps.
Choosing the right size will make your breastfeeding journey easier and last longer!
