For breastfeeding mothers, choosing a good breast pump is just the first step. The true key to comfortable and efficient pumping, often overlooked by many, is the breast pump flange size.
Many mothers experience pain during pumping, even nipple chafing and swelling, and assume it's due to too strong suction. However, up to 70% of the time, the reason is an inappropriate flange size.

-
Size too small: The nipple constantly rubs against the flange tunnel during pumping, leading to redness, chafing, and even mastitis.
-
Size too large: Too much of the areola is pulled into the flange tunnel, which not only causes areola swelling but also leads to incomplete milk expression due to uneven pressure.
Common Size Misconceptions

-
"I'll just use the same size as my friend": Everyone's nipple size, shape, and even left and right sides are different. It's recommended to measure both nipples individually.
-
"Will my size change after birth?": Yes. After the initial postpartum swelling subsides, or after breastfeeding for a period, nipple size may slightly change, requiring re-evaluation.
How to measure correctly

Use a flexible measuring tape or a dedicated "nipple measuring card" to measure the diameter of the base of the nipple (at its widest point).
Note: Only measure the "nipple" itself, do not include the surrounding "areola."
The measured diameter is not the flange size. To allow the nipple to move back and forth during pumping,
*For example: If the nipple base diameter is measured to be 17mm, a 21mm flange should be chosen.
- You need to add 3-4mm. Postpartum mothers 👩
- You need to add 4-5mm. Expectant mothers 🤰 (measuring around 36 weeks is recommended for more accuracy)
If your nipple is flat or difficult to measure

A little reminder
-
Left and right may differ: It's common for both nipples to be different sizes, please measure them separately.
-
Size changes: Nipple size may subtly change at different stages of lactation (e.g., early postpartum vs. after supply has regulated). If you feel discomfort, please remeasure.
-
Stop if uncomfortable: If you continue to experience pain or notice nipple injury, please consult a professional lactation consultant.
After measuring, observe
After putting on the equipment and starting to pump, please refer to the following checklist for final confirmation:
✅ This is the correct size
-
Free movement: The nipple glides smoothly in the center of the tunnel without constantly rubbing against the wall.
-
Minimal areola: Only a very small amount of areola (about 1-2mm) is slightly drawn into the tunnel.
-
Strong feeling of emptiness: After pumping, the breasts feel light and free of hard lumps.
