NOTES
ONE STEP AT A TIME

For breastfeeding mothers, choosing a good breast pump is just the first step. The real key to a comfortable and efficient pumping experience, often overlooked by many, is the flange size.

Many mothers experience pain when pumping, and even cracked or swollen nipples, thinking it's due to setting the suction too high. However, up to 70% of the time, the reason is an ill-fitting flange size.

  • Too small: The nipple continuously rubs against the flange tunnel during pumping, leading to redness, cracking, and even mastitis.

  • Too large: Too much of the areola is pulled into the flange tunnel, which not only causes areola swelling but also leads to inefficient milk removal due to uneven pressure.

Common Sizing Misconceptions

  • "I'll just use the same size as my friend": Everyone's nipple size, shape, and even the left and right sides are different. It's recommended to measure both nipples individually.

  • "Will my size change after giving birth?": Yes, it can. After the initial postpartum swelling subsides, or after breastfeeding for a period, nipple size may change slightly, requiring re-evaluation.

How to Measure Correctly

Use a soft ruler or a dedicated "nipple measuring card" to measure the diameter of the nipple base (at its widest point).

Note: Only measure the "nipple" itself, do not include the surrounding "areola."

The measured diameter is not the flange size. To allow space for the nipple to move back and forth during pumping,
*For example: If your nipple base measures 17mm, you should choose a 21mm flange.

  • You need to add 3-4mm. For postpartum mothers 👩
  • You need to add 4-5mm. For prenatal mothers 🤰 (measuring around 36 weeks is recommended for more accuracy)

If your nipples are flat or difficult to measure

Small reminders

  1. Left and right may differ: It's common for nipples to be different sizes, so measure both separately.

  2. Size may change: As breastfeeding stages change (e.g., early postpartum vs. after supply has regulated), sizes may subtly shift. If discomfort occurs, re-measure.

  3. Stop immediately if uncomfortable: If you experience persistent pain or notice nipple injury, consult a professional lactation consultant.

Once measured, observe

After putting on the equipment and starting to pump, cross-reference the following checklist for final confirmation:

✅ This is the correct size

  • Free movement: The nipple slides smoothly in the center of the tunnel and does not constantly rub against the tunnel wall.

  • Minimal areola: Only a minimal amount of areola (about 1-2mm) is slightly drawn into the tunnel.

  • Feeling of emptiness: After pumping, the breast feels light and free of hard lumps.
